"It's modern-day comfort when you want to nourish yourself and the planet." – Julie Van Rosendaal, The Globe and Mail
I’m a fan, often, but every time I listen to a new episode, I find myself thinking:
“Can we really do hard things?
What about the really, really hard ones that involve sustained and coordinated effort – can we do those hard things too?
On July 4, sudden flash floods swept through Texas. The Guadalupe River rose 26 ft in just 45 minutes and flooded the area. The waters completely submerged the surrounding neighbourhoods and an overnight girls’ camp. There’s a lot that has happened in the few weeks since then, but as a parent who has signed countless camp and field trip permission forms, I keep going back to that girl’s summer camp, the kids and counsellors who were washed away and those who held onto trees and sides of buildings, and survived. At least 135 deaths; most of them children and young counsellors, 100s more missing, and even 4 weeks later, the situation is still unfolding.
What makes this flood even more heartbreaking is how predictable it all was
This area of Texas is considered a ‘highly vulnerable area,’ so vulnerable that it is called the ‘flood alley.’ With climate change multiplying extreme events and unpredictable weather patterns, more such occurrences are expected
Climate change is here, and its effects are being felt everywhere. I share about this often here and in other places too. What we need right now is preparation, adaptation and resilience so that we can all bounce back. Come back here again and let’s chat about what’s possible. Forward this newsletter to a friend or two so they can sign up too. We need more of all of us! And here’s a reminder – we can do hard things. Because the alternative is even harder.
The next newsletter will come to you from India. I just arrived in India to visit my mom and family. I’ll be heading off on a road trip shortly.
Next time we chat, expect glorious pictures of all that’s going on in India.
